5 Decorating Mantras to Live By!

1. The closer something is to your body, the better it should be. This argues for fine sheets and beautiful rugs!

2. Surround yourself with quality, not clutter. Buy it once, buy it right.

3. Every room needs something living: flowers, goldfish, a pet, etc.

4. Honor the acts of daily living. If it's a habit, make it beautiful.

5. Life should sparkle! Every house needs a little bling!

Design tips from punchjordan Home

How big should an overhead light fixture be? Just add the length and the width of the room in feet, and whatever number you come up with is, in inches, your guide for the fixture's diameter. So a 14- by- 20 foot room would need a 34- inch- wide chandelier!

As seen at Bonfoey Art Gallery...available through punchjordan Home

Paula Rubinstein

As the daughter of an artist, I've had a pencil or paint brush in my hand since childhood, so it was inevitable that I be an artist. I graduated as a medical illustrator from Ohio State and was hired in that capacity Pfizer Laboratories. I subsequently started the Department of Medical Art at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.
Now the direction of my art has changed. Most of the year I paint in my studio overlooking a magnificent waterfall. My summers are spent at Lake Chautauqua where I am surrounded by flowers, 'antique' treasures from house sales and flea markets, and the fruits and vegetables from the farm across the road. These simple ingredients are the inspiration for the themes I paint, with the hope that the mood will linger on the canvas throughout the year.I have a spiritual feeling about and respect for our environment and never tire of it or take it for granted. I want my paintings to reflect that passion.

Dorothy Draper inspiration!

I believe in doing the thing you feel is right. If it looks right, it is right.
Dorothy Draper

Never look back, except for an occasional glance, look ahead and plan for the future. Success is not built on past laurels, but rather on a continuous activity. Keep busy searching out new ideas and, experimentally, keep ahead of the times, or at least up with them.
Dorothy Draper

Birds are so much wiser than we! A robin builds a nest for robins. A seagull builds a nest for seagulls. They don’t copy each other – or build themselves nests as described in The Birds’ Decorating Magazine. Dorothy Draper, In the Pink

You may concentrate on appearances all through the rest of your house, but in the bedroom comfort should be supreme. I think that bedrooms should also be very intimate rooms-they should express your personal preferences in every way…Of all the rooms in the house your bedroom is yours. Dorothy Draper, In the Pink

I’ll always put in one controversial item, it makes people talk. Dorothy Drape

intern adventures

I'm eighteen years old and I am currently working at punchjordan through what might be referred to as an independent study program. I'm graduating from high school in less than a month... thankfully. My future leads me to take a year off from the wonderful world of college and take this time in order to reorganize my life. I am far from traditional, and the idea of going straight off to four more years of school just didn't seem like the right move for me. My hope during this year off from school is to go to the incredible world of Greece and work on my photography and writing. The white houses with the bright blue roofs is an ideal subject matter and sitting next to the water with a pen in hand is the ideal environment. However, with a downward sloping economy, everyone knows that travel is not as easy as it sounds. It's no longer as simple as hopping on a plane and walking into a hotel. So cross your fingers with me in mind and hope that I get explore the world outside my front door.
Working at punchjordan is truly something that I have fallen in love with from the get-go. The store has many incredible pieces that catch your eye and make you want to design a room of your own. A particular piece in the store that I have grown attached to. In the back left side of the store, is a sterling silver crown that stands about two feet up from the wooden table it sits on. Inside it's large diameter sits a bottle pellegrino and columbia valley riesling and two beautifully detailed wine glasses. The crown as a whole is very heavy and is obviously very well constructed. The detail on the base of the crown is simple, yet beautiful, giving it the added sparkle that makes the piece so intriguing. Not a typical house decoration, this dazzling crown is a perfect piece to give as a wedding gift. With the summer wedding season coming so soon, this gift will be shining from every angle. An incredibly unique gift, the recipient will be nothing but pleased. No weddings to attend? It would be an ideal party decoration for your own home and could also be used as an everyday household item. This high-shine beverage icer complete with sparkling water, chardonnay and two festive stems is available for $375.00.
Although the sterling crown has most definitely caught my attention, there is one more item in the store that I have quickly fallen in love with. On the front wall of the store, off to the left is a beautiful oil and acrylic painting. Done by Carl Krabill and titled Shimmering Mist, this piece of art is truly mindblowing. It's size is 40 X 54 and was completed in 2010. The background of this painting is a beautiful lavender and pink mixture to create a beautiful looking sky setting. In the middle ground is the intricate brown that creates the trunks and branches of the tree. On the bottom of the painting is a ranging palette of greens that create the luscious looking grass, which fades perfectly into the light lavender sky. Finally, in the foreground is a mix between green and softly changing orange leaves. The orange tends to stay at the top of the painting while the green migrates downward mixing in with the beautiful grass. This painting would be a wonderful addition to any household, possibly above a mantle, on a wall of a large family room, or even in a long hallway. The painting is priced at $3100.00 and is just looking for a good home.
Overall, the entire store is very inspiring and there are very few pieces that I don't like. Although my time here at punchjordan is coming to a close, I hope I will be back soon to toss around ideas with everyone and look at the incredible fabric library that is being improved with each day that a new representative comes into the store. I look forward to the new inventory that comes to the store and can't wait to see what kind of design Patti and her designers come up with next. This opportunity has been amazing and I am so thankful for all the knowledge I have receieved within the past few days, it is something that I will always keep with me. So to all those designers out there, keep going and hopefully I will be joining you one day.
